Enhancing Workplace Comfort with Smart Environmental Monitoring using IoT and AI

For one of our customers, we’re excited to announce the launch of an innovative IoT and AI-based project aimed at improving employee comfort in the workplace! This project focuses on addressing a specific concern raised by the customer’s team: the high temperatures experienced during lunch breaks on our office balcony, which has a roof but lacks adequate insulation.

This project will be carried out by Uwanyirigira Gabriel, a student from the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACeIoT) at University of Rwanda (UR) as part of his internship at SMART IT CONSULTING Ltd.

The Problem

The balcony is a popular spot for employees to enjoy their lunch, but many have shared concerns about how uncomfortably hot it gets during peak sunlight hours. This has led us to ask several important questions:

  • How severe is the heat problem throughout the day?
  • Would investing in insulation or other cooling solutions be worth it?
  • Could we identify the best time for lunch to maximize comfort?

The Solution

To answer these questions, we’re leveraging IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies to develop a cutting-edge system that monitors and predicts environmental conditions.

Here’s How It Works:

  1. IoT Sensors for Data Collection:
We’re deploying smart sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, and other environmental metrics on the balcony throughout the day.
  2. Solar Irradiation Data from an API:
We’ll enhance our analysis by integrating solar irradiation data from reliable APIs like OpenWeather or Solcast. This data will give us insights into how sunlight impacts the temperature dynamics of the balcony.
  3. AI-Driven Predictions:
Using advanced AI techniques, we’ll predict temperature trends based on the combined sensor and API data. These predictions will help us identify the best time for lunch breaks and assess the potential effectiveness of various insulation solutions.
  4. Cost-Efficiency Assessment:
We’ll also test different insulation materials and strategies, using the system to measure their impact and determine the most cost-effective options.

What We Hope to Achieve

Our goal is to provide actionable insights for creating a more comfortable lunch experience for employees while making informed decisions about potential investments in insulation or other cooling solutions. The system will also serve as a practical demonstration of how IoT and AI can address real-world workplace challenges.

It is important to note that this project isn’t just about comfort—it’s about innovation and sustainability. By using smart technologies to monitor and optimize environmental conditions, we’re taking a step towards smarter workplaces and more efficient energy use.
